Resume and Cover Letter Assistance

The Career Center computer lab is open to all students for preparation and filing of resumes and cover letters, with a laser printer available for hard copies. Assistance in typing and preparing your resume is also available. Please call to schedule an appointment. Professional-quality resumes and cover letters can be produced here at no cost!

Career Connections Online Jobs Database

Career Connections, the job placement system for SWIC, consists of an online database of full-time and part-time job openings and SWIC students who are seeking employment. Job seekers must register for a workshop in the Career Center. The job lead information is then available online from any computer with Internet access. Students may contact the employer if interested in the position. Students may also post their resume in the online database, which can then be reviewed by employers.

Mock Interviews

The Career Activities and Employment Center staff offers practice interviews or consultation on interviewing techniques. Take a look at "How to Present a Positive Image" for interviewing tips.

On-Campus Recruiting

Throughout the school year, between four and six different companies each month are scheduled to come on campus and actively recruit students for positions within their companies. These On-Campus Recruitment Days provide an excellent opportunity for students to meet company representatives on a one-on-one basis and favorably influence their chances for employment.

A large poster is placed in the hallway on an easel outside the Career Activities and Employment Center and fliers are posted to the 12 bulletin boards throughout the college to notify students of dates and times of On-Campus Recruitment Days.

Companies recruit either through appointment and interview, reserving a private room for this method, or company representatives staff a table in the hallway in the Main Complex. Interviews require an appointment and you may set up your appointment by calling the Career Activities and Employment Center at 618-235-2700, ext. 5562. If a company chooses to use an open table, students need not make an appointment for them.

All students visiting with company representatives both for interviews or open table MUST have a resume and wear appropriate attire. For those students who have not yet completed a resume, our staff at the Career Center will be happy to assist you.

Job Fairs

Job fairs are held each fall at the Sam Wolf Granite City Campus and each spring at the Belleville Campus. A Health Sciences Job Fair is held in the spring at the Belleville Campus. In addition, the Career Center co-sponsors the Jobs Plus Job Fair held each fall at the Gateway Convention Center and the Gateway-to-Careers Job Fair held at the University of Missouri - St. Louis campus each spring. To obtain a current listing of job fair dates, check the calendar of events.

Internships

The internship program available through the Career Center has a coordinator who works with the academic program areas to assist students in preparing resumes, acquiring interviewing skills and locating appropriate internship sites.
