Your Foundation for Business Studies

Community college students who want to pursue a career in economics generally choose to continue their education by seeking a bachelor’s degree at a four-year college or university.

The Southwestern Illinois College Business program in economics provides students with the opportunity to take advantage of state-of-the-art facilities and highly qualified instructors to obtain an excellent foundation for further study in business.

Illinois Articulation Initiative

SWIC participates in the Illinois Articulation Initiative, which guarantees that students who successfully complete the requirements for an Associate in Science degree with a business emphasis will receive full credit for all of their courses when they transfer to most public colleges and universities in the state of Illinois.

Students who receive an Associate in Science degree at SWIC and go on to pursue a bachelor’s degree from a four-year college will have the educational background to succeed in a variety of business-related careers including management, finance, accounting, marketing and economics. They also are prepared to pursue graduate degrees in these same fields or in other fields such as law, public policy or social sciences. The course guidelines listed in the link below represent a typical sequence of courses that generally works well for students who want to major in business. However, enrollment in some courses is contingent on satisfying prerequisite requirements; therefore, some students may need to take additional courses not listed in these guidelines to satisfy the prerequisites.

A major in economics will prepare students for employment in business and government. Economics is also an excellent major for students who plan on graduate study in law, business or any of the social sciences. A minor in economics is excellent for those who are majoring in any of the social sciences or a business-related field. ECON 201 and ECON 202 may be used to meet the social science course elective.
