Action Projects
Below are brief summaries of each of the AQIP Action Projects. For more information on any of these projects follow the "Read More" links.
Action Project #5: Improve Developmental Learning Opportunities
Overall, based on 2005 institutional data, only 51% of SWIC students enrolled in developmental courses pass. By improving student success in developmental courses those students will have an equal chance of completing a degree or transferring as their peers who began with college-level courses.
This project includes research into current developmental learning results as well as best practices in the field. Other activities may include (but are not limited to): targeted faculty development programs, collaborative activities between instruction and support services, learning communities, structured learning assistance, and bridge programs.

Action Project #6: Improving Student Retention
Too many students do not persist in entry-level classes, semester to semester, fall to fall, or to program completion. This project will provide the opportunity to address student persistence and retention and thus enhance student success, satisfaction, and program completion.
The project's goals are the following:
- To evaluate the efficacy of existing strategies and establish mechanisms for utilizing this feedback to improve retention practices;
- To develop new initiatives for enhancing student retention which will yield measurable results that will serve as the basis for further process improvements.
- To evaluate the effectiveness of the recommended improvements relevant to the completion of the students' educational goals.
Action Project #8: Enhancing Instructional Technology
AQIP Action Project #8 focuses on "instructional technology" - the software and hardware needed by faculty to effectively conduct their teaching and learning.
The project develops technology specifications and planning details directly from instructional faculty and appropriate staff. Several key outcomes will be standards for "smart" classroom hardware, a quantification of bandwidth needs, a plan to upgrade network technologies, and recommendations concerning the needs of IT security within an academic context. An important deliverable will be a recommended budget for technology enhancements.
