Course Fees
Some college-credit classes require an additional course fee to cover the cost of supplies. These fees are listed in the class details of the class search in eSTORM.
GED and English as a Second Language Classes
General Education Development (GED) classes and English as a Second Language (ESL) are free. There is, however, a $35 fee to take the GED test.
Senior Citizen Tuition and Fees
Residents of Community College District 522 who are 60 years of age or older will be charged tuition at the rate of $70 per credit hour ($5 less per credit hour than the standard tuition rate). All other costs, such as fees, books and supplies, and CSA classes, are not reduced.
Senior Citizens who document their annual household income to be less than $14,000 are eligible to apply for free tuition. Applications are available at the Enrollment Services Office. Withdrawals are subject to the "Refund Policy."
Student ID Card
A Student Identification Card is available free of charge to all students enrolled in a credit or Adult Basic Education course, beginning Summer 2008. ID cards will be issued by the Department of Public Safety at the Belleville or Sam Wolf Granite City campuses, or by the Student Development Office at the Red Bud Campus.
Student ID Card Replacement Fee
Student ID cards contain confidential information and should be safeguarded. In the event that a card is lost, a replacement ID card may be made available for a $25.00 fee. Contact the Business Office for additional information.
Withdrawal Fee
If you withdraw from a course within the refund period (as stated in the "Refund Policy"), you will be charged an administrative fee equal to 10 percent of the tuition amount. For withdrawal procedures, refer to "Dropping Courses."
If you are dropped from a class for nonpayment, by the Business Office, you will be charged a Withdrawal Fee of 10 percent of the tuition amount.
Official Transcript Request Fee
Southwestern official transcripts will be released at no charge upon the written request of the student, provided financial obligations to the college have been fulfilled. A RUSH or FAXED transcript may be requested for a charge of $10 and will be sent within two working days following receipt of the request. This may be paid by money order, cash, MasterCard, VISA, Discover, or eCheck at the time of the request. The college reserves the right to limit the number of transcripts issued at no charge.
1098-T Information
The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 allows a tax credit to be claimed for out-of-pocket payments made to Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) during the Tax Filing Year (January 1 - December 31) for tuition and certain fees. The IRS requires that SWIC provide the 1098-T statement to you for your use in completing IRS Form 8863 - Education Credits, Hope and Lifetime Learning Credits. This statement reports amounts billed at Southwestern Illinois College in the Tax Filing Year. This information is also reported to the IRS.
The amounts and calculations used to determine the credit are the decision of the taxpayer after consideration of relevant IRS regulations, Form 8863, and, perhaps, the advice of a tax consultant. We recommend that you refer to your student invoices (bills) or receipts to assist you in determining the amount of credit that may be claimed on your behalf.
