Academic Counseling:
Assistance with Educational and Vocational Decisions

Help and information is always available to make sound educational and vocational decisions from your first experience at Southwestern, throughout your semesters here, and finally, your graduation. Counselors will help you to choose classes wisely to meet degree requirements.

The Counseling Center is usually the first stop people make to gather information on enrolling, taking the math and English assessment, learning how to plan a schedule and register for classes, or for assistance in the decision whether or not to begin college.

Counselors are also available to show you how all the courses you have taken can be used to meet degree requirements.

Counselors help you in transferring to a four-year college or university. They can assist you in choosing courses that will ensure a smooth and easy transfer.

If you do not intend to transfer, counselors will work with you in choosing the appropriate courses for your particular career program to earn an associate in applied science degree or certificate.

Need some ideas and strategies to sharpen your study skills? Counselors can show you many techniques and help you sort out what will work best to meet your educational goals. Individual counseling sessions, as well as group Academic Workshops, and Math Anxiety Workshops are available.

There is also free tutoring available on campus for some Southwestern Courses. One program is peer tutoring where other students are the tutors. Another tutoring program is LACE where courses are tutored by adjunct faculty.

All tutoring is supplemental to instruction and should not take the instructor's place. Online learners should feel free to use the help available from the Tutoring Center or through the LACE program, but instructors should be your contact for assistance.

Counselors are your sources for referral to Southwestern educational, financial and other student support services.

Career Counseling:
Assistance with Making Career Decisions

If you're not sure what you want to do to earn your way in the world, or if you want to change careers but don't know what path to take, counselors can help you through the decision-making process.

There are numerous workshops, activities and assessments available to increase self-awareness and to facilitate career exploration. You can gain insights into your interests and values, plus gain useful occupational information.

If you prefer, you can make an appointment for an individual session with a counselor to help facilitate the decisions you make for your future.

Call the Counseling Center to make an appointment or obtain a list of current services.

Personal Counseling:
Assistance With Psychological, Emotional, Social or Cultural Difficulties

Troubled with managing stress or anxiety? Coping with relationships? Balancing work, home and school? These and other personal concerns can affect your academic success. Many of Southwestern's counselors are National Board Certified Counselors (NBCC) and able to help you cope with that personal situation which can be a bump in the road to success.

All appointments are strictly confidential. Personal counseling always takes place in the privacy of a counselors' office to ensure confidentiality. A Southwestern counselor and the student will discuss any prospects of long-term counseling. Long-term arrangements can be easily referred to community agencies. Small group Adult Transition Workshops led by a professional counselor are also available.
