Distance Learning

Distance learning provides students with an educational alternative to traditional classroom settings and the time constraints they impose. Telecourses and online courses allow students to take classes from the convenience of their own home, and video conferencing courses provide students with the opportunity to take classes at the college site that is most convenient for them.

Is Distance Learning Right for You?

To determine if a distance learning course is right for you, review the following characteristics and indicate with a "yes" or "no" how each applies to you.

Characteristics

  1. I am self-motivated and self-disciplined.
  2. I am a good "time manager."
  3. I am willing to commit 6 to 10 hours each week to a distance learning class.
  4. I am comfortable working with computers.
  5. I can communicate effectively through e-mail, discussion boards and chat rooms.
  6. I have convenient and frequent access to a computer with an Internet connection.
  7. I am comfortable with e-mail, word processing and with using the Internet.
  8. I am able to express my thoughts and opinions in writing.
  9. I can read analytically and critically.

If you answered "no" to three or more of these statements, you should rethink your decision to enroll in a distance learning course.
