How do I register for an online course?

The registration process is the same for online courses as it is for all SWIC courses. Current students may register in person, by telephone or online. New students may register in person or by telephone. For more information contact:

How do I obtain textbooks and other course materials?

If a textbook is required for your course visit your bookstore or for additional information visit the bookstore website at www.swic.edu/servies/bookstore.jsp.

When can I access my online course?

An informational packet containing material from the instructor will be mailed to all on-line students approximately one week before classes begin. The class access date will be included.

What skills do I need to succeed in an online course?

Students should have basic computer skills and should be comfortable using a browser and word processing software. They should also be highly motivated and able to work independently.

How will I be contacted with information about course procedures?

An information packet containing instructor information, course login instructions, an orientation schedule, and Library information will be mailed to students approximately one week before classes begin.

Will I receive credit toward a degree for online courses?

Yes, all online courses are credit courses.

Do I need special hardware and software?

Students need a computer with Pentium III processor or newer, 128 MB RAM or higher, Windows Vista or Windows XP, CD-ROM drive or CD-RW drive or DVD drive or Flash Drive, a sound card and speakers.

Internet access (On-campus labs are available) with an Internet browser such as Internet Explorer 5.5 and higher or Netscape Communicator 6.2 and higher. A 56K modem minimum, DSL or cable modem.

Requirements may vary by course.

If I am enrolled in an online course, will library services and resources be available to me?

Yes. Access to Periodical and Newspaper Databases is provided through the SWIC Library homepage. Once you have enrolled as an online student, you will receive username and password information for the Library Electronic Databases through the mail.

Books may be checked out using your SWIC Library Card at the Belleville Campus Library, Sam Wolf Granite City Campus Library, and Red Bud Campus Library.

What if I experience technical problems?

If you are experiencing technical problems with your Internet connection (such as connecting, sending and receiving e-mail, or browsing the Web), please contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
