To understand the present and the future, we must understand the past. The study of History teaches students to think on many levels. It provides a solid foundation of knowledge, so that we can better participate in the world around us.
Southwestern Illinois College's History Department offers students a wide range of opportunities to study in areas as diverse as American History, European History, World History, and the History of Religion, as well as the histories of Russia, Ireland, Britain, the Middle East and more. An Associate degree with an emphasis on History provides a basic overview of the discipline and prepares you to transfer to a four-year History program.
A Bachelor of Arts degree in History prepares students for careers in business, industry or government, as well as for continued study leading to advanced degrees, for professional careers in academia, and in various archival and research fields. A minor in history is a good choice for any of the other social sciences as well as for English, foreign language and journalism.
