About the Medical Transcription Program

The Medical Transcription program prepares students to provide medical transcription services to physicians' offices, clinics, private transcribing services and hospitals.

In this program, you will learn medical terminology, medical transcription as well as word processing and keyboarding skills.

Medical Transcription Class

Duties of medical assistants include receiving patients, gathering medical history, transcribing and maintaining medical records, handling correspondence and manuscripts, and assuming responsibility for automated and manual office procedures. In addition, medical assistants obtain vital signs, sterilize instruments, perform routine laboratory procedures and electrocardiograms, and prepare patients for special examinations.

The Medical Transcription Program is offered at the college's Belleville and Granite City campuses. Upon successful completion of the program, you can enter the work force with entry-level computer and medical transcription skills.

Duties of a medical transcriptionist include: transcribing medical records, medical laboratory reports, office chart notes, history and physical examinations, consultations, letters, memos, admission notes, operative reports, discharge summaries and diagnostic studies.

You will have a chance to put your classroom knowledge to work during a 120-hour externship at an area medical facility.

After successfully completing 11 credit hours, you will earn a certificate of proficiency.

After completing the Medical Transcription Certificate you will be prepared to work as a:

Medical transcriptionists are employed in physicians' offices, medical transcription services, hospitals, and some home-based offices.

Starting salary is about $22,000 and can vary depending on the type and location of the health care facility.
