Sign Language Studies/Interpreter Training

About the Sign Language Studies: Interpreter Program

For more information on the Sign Language Studies Program, please contact the program coordinator, Karyn Houston karyn.houston@swic.edu.

The Sign Language Studies/Interpreter Training program teaches students to recognize and adapt to the variation in language use that exists within the deaf communities.

Sign Language interpreting is a highly specialized field requiring an in-depth course of study as offered here at Southwestern Illinois College. While the foundation of our curriculum is a commitment to American Sign Language (ASL), the professional sign language interpreter is a service provider who must be able to adjust to a broad range of consumer preferences for interpretation along a broad spectrum of communication.

Sign Language Studies

Students will learn to create equivalency in meaning by mediating the linguistic and cultural differences between these visual- and auditory-based languages. Graduates of the AAS degree will be prepared for entry-level, paraprofessional interpreting positions.

Also, the Sign Language Studies/Basic Communication certificate program is designed for individuals who want general information and skills in basic Sign Language or communication with people who are deaf.
