Ward Clerk

For more information on the Ward Clerk Program, please contact the program coordinator, Carol Eckert at 618-235-2700, ext. 5268 or carol.eckert@swic.edu.

In Southwestern's Ward Clerk program, students will learn to perform the clerical, receptionist and coordination tasks of professional ward clerks.

Ward Clerk Students

In this one-semester, six-credit-hour program, students learn medical terminology and accepted abbreviations, anatomy, and physiology, communication skills, safety guidelines and receptionist duties. How to transcribe physicians orders, and the legal and ethical aspects of working in a healthcare facility are taught also. Clinical experience will be provided in area hospitals.

In one semester, this program will prepare students for employment in hospitals and nursing homes as ward clerks. Graduates earn a certificate, and may elect to join the National Association of Health Unit Clerks and take a national certification exam.

Students should be high school or GED graduates in good health with good communication skills. Typing or keyboard experience is helpful.

Students enrolling in Allied Health programs should be aware that some clinical facilities may require criminal background checks. If so, students will be provided with the appropriate information. Students must also meet any other requirements of the clinical sites, including health exam, immunizations, and drug testing. Some clinical facilities may require auto and/or health insurance. Malpractice insurance, when required, is provided by the college through assessment of lab fees. Students may be dropped from the program if they fail to pass the criminal background check or any of the clinical requirements.
