Search, Place Holds, View Patron Information, Renew - And More!

Anyone can access the Southwestern Illinois College Library using the SILNET online catalog from off campus through the Internet. Using SILNET will allow you to:

• locate material that is part of the Shawnee Library System automated catalog including books, videos, CDs, DVDs and a broad assortment of other items
• find the owning library and shelf location (call number) of library material
• determine if an item is checked in or out

A current SWIC library card in good standing and a personal identification number (PIN) are required to:

• request material found online (place a HOLD in the online catalog)
• view your own library record
• renew items that are checked out on your library account (the My Account tab).

SILNET Tabs

• Search

  Search the library online catalog by selecting an index (Title keyword, Author, Subject keyword, Series, Subject or Title), entering search terms and clicking on the "go" button.

• My Account (PIN required)

  Use a current SWIC library card and PIN to view and renew items checked out or view and delete items on hold. You may also view your library patron profile and any fines/blocks on your library account.

• Participating Libraries

  A listing of the 65+ academic, public and school libraries in the SILNET online catalog.

• Ask A Question

  Library reference service is provided online through Ask A Librarian. Using this tab links you to a Question Point Ask A Librarian screen where you may send questions by e-mail or chat with an online librarian.

SWIC Library SILNET Policies

• Holds

  Place up to 10 holds for items owned by any library in SILNET.

• Personal Identification Numbers (PINs)

  A PIN is a four-digit number corresponding to the date and month of a library patron's birth. Example: September 5 = 0905. The SWIC library assigns a PIN when a patron applies for a library card. The SILNET online catalog allows users to change their own PINs. (Go to My Account tab and Profile to do so.)

• Renewals

  SILNET permits two online renewals for eligible items. Renewal will not be allowed for items that have been placed on hold by other library patrons or borrowed from libraries outside the Shawnee Library System.

• Fines/Blocks

  Overdue and lost items and library fines of $1 or more block a patron from using the SILNET renew and hold functions. Return of or payment for lost materials or fines clears the block.
