MLK AND MALCOLM X MEET AGAIN BY POPULAR DEMAND

Back by popular demand, Southwestern Illinois College is staging two more free public performances on Monday, April 2 of the "The Meeting" by Jeff Stetson. The first performance will be held at noon at East St. Louis Community College Center, 601 James R. Thompson Blvd., in the multipurpose room of Building D. The second is at 7:30 p.m. in the Belleville Campus Theatre, 2500 Carlyle Ave.

This award-winning play depicts a fictitious meeting of the peaceful civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. and his militant counterpart, Malcolm X.

There is no charge and everyone is invited.

The one-act play is sponsored by the SWIC Foundation and features SWIC students Dimitri Heaggans of Belleville, Anthony Smith of East St. Louis and Mike Matthews of Fairview Heights.

For more information, contact Donna Moody, director of the Minority Transfer and Multicultural Student Services Center, at 618-235-2700, extension 5537.

HERSTORY CELEBRATION CONTINUES WITH PERFORMANCES

Go on a journey of African-American and women's history when Southwestern Illinois College presents "Having Our Say, The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years" March 26-29.

The show spotlights two sisters, 103-year-old Sadie Delany and 101-year-old Bessie Delany. SWIC students Danielle Washington, portraying Sadie, and Beverly Penermon, portraying Bessie, invite you to the Mount Vernon, New York home the sisters shared and then take you on a journey spanning 100 years of U.S. history.

Washington and Penermon tell anecdotal tales drawn from the sisters' rich family history and careers as pioneering African-American professional women. Audience members will feel as though they have traveled back in time to the ladies' childhood home, and will share in the sisters' emotional reflections on some of U.S. history's landmark events.

"We're pleased to help sponsor these performances as part of this year's Herstory celebration," notes Minority Transfer and Multicultural Student Services Center Director Donna Moody. "This show is a story about the struggles and achievements of two incredible women, but is a celebration of all humans - male and female, our nation and human spirit."

Check out these free March 26-29 performances:

The SWIC Foundation, the Herstory Committee and Multicultural Student Services Center have teamed to sponsor the performances.

SWIMMING WITH SHARKS IS THEME OF SWGCC FAMILY NIGHT OUT

Learn what it is like to swim with great white sharks and find out how important sharks are to the environment when Southwestern Illinois College's Sam Wolf Granite City Campus presents "The Australian Great White Shark Adventure" Tuesday, April 3.

The Family Night Out event starts at 6:30 p.m. in the campus Commons, 4950 Maryville Road. The program is free and open to the public.

Professional scuba divers and marine educators Wayne and Karen Brown bring the ocean to the campus with their multi-image presentation about great white sharks. Two members of the audience will be selected to help demonstrate how sharks have adapted to their environment using specimens, and specially designed props and models. The Browns will share images of their own dives with great white sharks. Kids will have an opportunity to meet Shiela, a 15-foot inflatable great white shark, also.

"It is pretty exciting to hear about the Browns' real life encounters with sharks in Australia," said Jill Lorance, campus evening supervisor. "Kids can learn a lot about the marine ecosystem and how important these animals are to the environment."

For more information, contact Lorance at 618-931-0600, extension 6642, or toll free in Illinois at 1-800-222-5131, extension 6642.

BLOOD DRIVE APRIL 11 AT SWIC'S SAM WOLF GRANITE CITY CAMPUS

You can help replenish blood supplies in local hospitals by donating blood at the American Red Cross Blood Drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 11 at Southwestern Illinois College's Granite City Campus, 4950 Maryville Road, Room 311.

All types of blood are needed, especially O Positive. That type is most common and used in 52 percent of all surgeries. Because only 46 percent of the population has type O Positive, people with this blood type are asked to donate more frequently. There is also an urgent need for O Negative, A Negative and B Negative blood types as well.

If you do not know your blood type, you can find out when you donate.

To become a donor, you must weigh at least 110 pounds and be at least 17 years old. If you are 16 years old and wish to donate in Illinois, you need a permission form signed by your parent or guardian. New donors should bring proper identification, such as a driver's license, to the blood drive.

After donating, blood donors will receive refreshments and a place to rest briefly.

A Spring Fling cookout will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the campus front lawn. Lunch is free to blood donors. It is $2 for a hot dog or hamburger, chips and soda. Donors are eligible for a drawing to win a free gift basket.

For more information, call Jill Lorance, SWGCC evening supervisor, at 618-931-0600, extension 6642, or toll free at 1-800-222-5131, extension 6642.

INTERNATIONAL ILLUSIONIST, MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER COMES TO SWIC

March 8, 2007 - Internationally known illusionist, magician and motivational speaker Jim Passé will take center stage at 10:30 a.m., March 28 at Southwestern Illinois College Belleville Campus varsity gym, 2500 Carlyle Ave. Passé's speech and performance is free and open to the public as part of the SWIC Special Services Center's annual Student Transition Day and Disabilities Awareness Program.

Passé uses more than magic to inspire and motivate. In 1995, after being struck by a 950-pound crate containing one of his illusions, he was left paralyzed in both legs. With a determined spirit and an intense desire to continue performing, he stunned the entertainment world by returning to the stage the following year in a wheelchair. It is with this experience combined with magic that he becomes an example of how people can overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles to achieve their life's goals.

For more information, call 618-235-2700, extension 5368, or TDD 618-234-3347.

MURDER MYSTERY COMES TO SWIC'S SAM WOLF GRANITE CITY CAMPUS

Tickets are available now for "The Return of the King," the Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre at Southwestern Illinois College's Sam Wolf Granite City Campus, Saturday, March 24.

The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the dinner show begins at 7 p.m. in the campus Commons, 4950 Maryville Road.

"The Return of the King" is presented by Jest Entertainment, a St. Louis-based, interactive murder mystery dinner theatre touring company. Speaking parts are available for audience members who wish to participate in the show.

In this show, the King of Rock 'n' Roll is still alive, suffering from amnesia, and working in a bowling alley. When he performs live for the first time in decades, foul play could end his show as well as his life.

Tickets for "The Return of the King" are $17.50 per person and include a buffet dinner and show. The audience can take part in a '50s era costume contest.

"This is a show that everybody will love. It's fun and lively," said Mandy Robinson, GCC Campus Activities assistant. "The costume contest will give everyone a chance to join in the fun."

Purchase tickets in advance for "The Return of the King" through the campus Business Office at 618-931-0600, extension 6640, or toll free in Illinois at 1-800-222-5131, extension 6640.
