SWIC TO DISPLAY ILLINOIS PORTRAIT OF A SOLDIER EXHIBIT

You can help pay tribute to Illinois fallen service men and women by visiting the Portrait of a Soldier exhibit to be unveiled by Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 9 at the Southwestern Illinois College Belleville Campus, 2500 Carlyle Ave.

The exhibit, which will hang in the Main Complex First Floor Lounge and hallway, is free and open to the public. The portraits will be on display from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday for approximately one week.

"We are pleased to be part of this effort to honor the men and women from Illinois who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the War on Terror," said SWIC President Georgia Costello, Ph.D. "I invite the community to share in this wonderful tribute to our fallen service men and women."

The Portrait of a Soldier exhibit is a traveling display of more than 200 hand-sketched 12- by 18-inch portraits of fallen service members from Illinois who have been killed since Sept. 11, 2001 in the Global War on Terror.

Artist Cameron Schilling, 24, of Mattoon drew the first portrait in August 2004, after Army Spc. Charles Neeley, also of Mattoon, was killed in Iraq. Schilling gave the sketch to Spc. Neeley's parents to convey his sympathy for their loss. In October 2005, while a student at Eastern Illinois University, Schilling decided to draw a portrait of every Illinois service member who has fallen during the Global War on Terror.

The portraits are copies of the originals, which have been given to the fallen soldiers' next of kin. As the exhibit travels throughout the state of Illinois, Lt. Gov. Quinn holds a press conference on the opening day at each location, and invites families of the fallen soldiers who live in the area to attend.

For more information about the exhibit, call Public Information and Marketing at 618-235-2700, ext. 5258 or toll free in Illinois at 800-222-5131, ext. 5258.

TALENT SHOW, OUTDOOR CONCERT DRAW WELCOME TO CLOSE

A week's worth of activities designed to welcome students to the Southwestern Illinois College Red Bud Campus Fall 2008 Semester draws to a close with tribute acts and an outdoor concert by the region's own Ace in the Sleeve Friday, Aug. 29.

An Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta duet, a Sister Sledge song, an Elvis act and a country line dance demonstration serve as warm up acts during the SWIC Red Bud Campus Talent and Air Band Show that takes the stage before Ace in the Sleeve. The show begins at 7 p.m. in Lincoln Park, across from the campus on West South Fourth Street.

SWIC alumnus Aaron Rabe of Red Bud and his buddies Clint Benesh and Mark Harbrovisky, both of St. Louis, and John Kistner of Belleville - collectively known as Ace in the Sleeve - will take to the stage at 8 p.m. The group will perform until 10 p.m. in Lincoln Park.

The band performs classic rock favorites such as "Mustang Sally" and "Sweet Home Alabama." They also perform modern rock and original works.

Rabe offers up the group's vocals while Benesh plays guitar, Hrabovsky plays bass and Kistner kicks it on the drums. Each has a nickname based on the ace of a suit in a deck of cards.

The talent show and air band event, and outdoor concert bring to a close Welcome Back Week at the campus.

LEADERSHIP SERIES TO CONTINUE IN SPARTA THIS SEPTEMBER

The second installment of the Leadership Success Series, sponsored by the Regional Leadership and Development Committee, is set to begin this September with programs on accountability and employee coaching. Both sessions will be held at the Sparta Chamber of Commerce office, 154 W. Broadway.

Through "Accountability That Works," you will gain an understanding of how a lack of accountability negatively impacts an organization. You, or your employees, will leave with practical tools to implement new practices, fostering a greater sense of empowerment, effectiveness and increased productivity. The session will meet from 8 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Sept. 11.

"Coaching: Bringing Out The Best In Others" develops leaders who help people achieve their goals and avoid problems. Leaders learn a proven coaching process, a continuous cycle that ensures they identify opportunities, provide needed support, observe performance, and measure results until the desired outcomes are achieved. The session will meet from 1-5 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 11.

"I have personally participated in leadership trainings across the nation and have found seminars offered by the Regional Leadership and Development Committee to be extremely valuable right here in our backyard. The instructors have been out in the work force and have experienced what all of us are going through on a daily basis so they have real and insightful feedback to give," said Kelly Ethington, vice president of operations for CTS Technology Solutions. "I have found the program so valuable that I am putting my management staff through the leadership series as well. I feel that it is vital for new managers in our company to take part in this series for their success, as well as ours."

The registration fee for each session is $50 per person. Individuals may attend one or both sessions.

If you would like to attend, or wish to send your employees, contact Karen Stallman at 618-282-6682, ext. 8133, or e-mail karen.stallman@swic.edu.
