SWIC HOSTS WRITERS' WORKSHOP WITH EUGENE REDMOND AT ESLCCC

Poet Laureate of East St. Louis Eugene Redmond is offering a free writers' workshop as part of a series sponsored by Southwestern Illinois College at the East St. Louis Community College Center. The workshop will be held in Building A, Room 1029 at 4 p.m., Monday, Feb. 25 and is open to the public.

Redmond will read from his works, discuss the writing process and offer feedback to audience members who wish to read their own work.

A Professor Emeritus for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Redmond is an award-winning poet, international lecturer and literary editor. He is a member of the National Hall of Fame for Writers of African Descent, sharing this honor with the likes of Maya Angelou and Toni Morrison. His works include "Drumvoices: The Mission of Afro-American Poetry."

SWIC TO HOST 20TH ANNUAL METRO EAST COLLEGE FAIR ON FEB. 24

More than 75 colleges and universities will participate in the 20th Annual Metro East Baccalaureate College Fair held at Southwestern Illinois College. The fair will take place from 1:30-3:30 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 24 in the SWIC Varsity Gym, 2500 Carlyle Ave.

In addition to visiting with college representatives, students and parents can attend two free workshops presented by Roger Knox, SWIC Financial Aid adviser. The workshops will begin at 1 and 2 p.m. The first workshop, "How to Find Money for College," includes information on grants, loans, scholarships and student employment. The second workshop will assist students in completing their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Families attending this workshop will need to bring both parent's and student's 2007 tax information. Individuals will be able to file online in the computer lab.

Colleges attending the fair include Bradley University, Eastern Illinois University, Greenville College, Illinois State University, McKendree University, Millikin University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Southwestern Illinois College, University of Illinois at Springfield, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Western Illinois University, Fontbonne University, Lindenwood University, Saint Louis University, St. Louis College of Pharmacy, Truman State University, University of Missouri-Columbia, University of Missouri-St. Louis, Michigan State University, Creighton University, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Air Force Academy and University of Southern Indiana, among others.

The College Fair is sponsored in conjunction with the Illinois Association for College Admissions Counselors and is part of the statewide Illinois College Exposition Program.
