Make a difference in your community by addressing the needs of local students and families. Become an AmeriCorps member and serve at a local school or neighborhood organization.

Positions

Currently, Belleville AmeriCorps places members in the following positions:

  • Tutors—preschool through college
  • Computer Tutors—elementary and junior high school
  • Summer Camp Counselors—elementary and junior high school
  • Volunteer Coordinators—neighborhood/school partnerships

Members are also required to attend trainings and complete service projects throughout their term of service.

Placement

Our administrative offices are located on the campus of Southwestern Illinois College; however, members are placed throughout the community. Members serve:

  • Belleville School District 118, all schools
  • Franklin Neighborhood Community Association
  • 17th Street Neighborhood Association
  • Lebanon Kids/Lebanon Grade School
  • Southwestern Illinois College, Kids' Club and Success Center
  • YMCA of Southwestern Illinois
  • Harmony Neighborhood Association

Qualifications

  • Applicants must be at least 17 years of age
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent resident aliens of the United States
  • Applicants must obtain High School Diploma or equivalent before using Segal Education Award
  • Applicants for tutoring positions must prove at least 60 hours of college credit or pass an adult basic skills test
  • Applicants for Education Award Only positions must qualify for Federal Work Study
  • Applicants with previous volunteer experience and/or experience working with children are preferred
  • Applicants must be open to new and challenging experiences
  • Applicants must pass a comprehensive background screening

  • All members receive a living allowance dispersed in equal installments or Federal Work Study payments throughout the life of a member contract
