SeniorLink
SeniorLink is a computer program targeted to mature persons 40 years of age and older who have had little or no exposure to computers and need hands-on instruction in a peer-assisted environment. Classes are small, with a maximum of 7 persons per class, and are taught by trained volunteers who instruct from our own manual written with 6 years of experience in teaching mature adults. When class participants master the basics and want more instruction, we encourage them to take classes at the beginning stage at Southwestern Illinois College. SeniorLink classes include Introduction to Windows XP, Intermediate Windows, Intro to Excel, Intro to PowerPoint, Word Processing, Print Shop essentials, Intro to the Internet, and E-Mail fundamentals. SeniorLink operates on an annual donation from Belleville Township and nominal class participant fees.
Because many of our seniors don't know the language or manual manipulation of the computer and its devices, it is hard for them to be successful in mainstream classes. We give them the practice and foundation they need to go on to real college classes and succeed.
VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED!
The SeniorLink Computer Club helps senior citizens and baby boomers learn computer skills at their labs in Belleville at the PSOP Center and at the SWIC Granite City campus. Volunteer instructors are needed to assist with basic computer operating skills. You do not need to be licensed as a teacher. You need only to be familiar with the language of the computer, patient and sympathetic to the needs of the mature adult novice PC user, and willing to donate 2 hours per week for a maximum of 6 weeks. The lab computers have:
- Windows XP
- MS Word
- MS PowerPoint
- MS Excel
- Print Shop
- Internet access via cable
- Outlook Express
