About Public Safety:The Department of Public Safety has an office on the Belleville and Granite City campuses. On the Red Bud Campus, Public Safety services are coordinated through the Office of the Provost or the Evening Campus Supervisor. Public Safety Officers are on duty and patrol the Belleville and Granite City campuses 24 hours a day. These officers assist in maintaining safety and provide certain needed and helpful services.
The department maintains a cooperative relationship with all local, state and federal police agencies. Law enforcement support to the campuses and extension centers is provided by the respective city and county law enforcement department under whose jurisdiction the campus or extension center is located.
Southwestern Illinois College operates as a public community college. The facilities are accessible to the public for all approved purposes. Persons entering, or utilizing the facilities are subject to request for acceptable identification and required compliance with all rules, regulations and laws applicable to the college.
The Department of Public Safety publishes the annual Campus Security Report. The CSR provides crime statistics for the college's campuses and off-campus sites. The college also keeps an updated registered sex offender list. This list provides information on students and employees who are required by law to be registered with the college as sex offenders. The department does have a policy that allows for the confidential reporting of suspected crimes.

Compilation and distribution of the Campus Crime Report is mandated for all institutions participating in the student financial aid programs under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965. Specifically, the law requires institutions to disclose information about campus security policies and procedures and to provide statistics concerning the occurrence of certain criminal offenses by designated categories. The report also must include statements about campus law enforcement policies, campus security education, vehicle(s) for reporting and procedures for handling reports of sexual assault. Monthly Activity ReportsThe Monthly Activity Reports are generated from Public Safety Case Reports. DPS maintains a daily log, which depicts all crimes reported to the department, except when disclosure of such information is prohibited by law or such disclosure would jeopardize the confidentiality of the victim. Information may be temporarily withheld if release of such information would:
- jeopardize an ongoing criminal investigation or the safety of an individual;
- cause a suspect to flee or evade detection; or
- result in the destruction of evidence.
Sexual Assault Awareness-Education
In accordance with Public Act 88-629, SWIC has established a community task force focusing on sexual assault responses. The following information is provided in accordance with Public Act, 95-764, Education-Sexual Assault Awareness.
Southwestern students are entitled to an Identification Card. The Identification Card is optional but is required to receive the following services:

The initial Identification Card is provided free, beginning Summer 2008. Replacement Identification Cards will be made available for a $25.00 replacement fee. The Department of Public Safety at the Belleville (BC) and Sam Wolf Granite City (SWGCC) campuses and the Office of Student and Community Services at the Red Bud Campus (RBC) will issue the cards. To obtain the ID card, the student must be enrolled in a credit or Adult Basic Education course. Students must have a valid photo ID and provide their student ID number.
Parking Permits:For students,faculty and staff, parking is by permit only on the Belleville and Granite City campuses. Proof of a valid driver's license is required before a permit can be issued. The permit is free and issued by the respective Public Safety Department, or through the Provost at the Red Bud Campus. A copy of the Southwestern Traffic Code will be provided when the permit is issued.
Parking and Traffic Enforcement:Authorized parking areas are established on each campus. Restricted and prohibited parking areas are marked and are specified in the Southwestern Traffic Code. Traffic citations and complaints are issued to violators as official notifications of violations. Unpaid traffic citations may result in the withholding of college services such as future enrollment transcript requests and release of final grades.
