Traffic Safety on Campus
Driver's on campus are required to comply with the provisions of the Illinois Vehicle Code and the SWIC Traffic Code. A traffic accident can be tragic for everyone involved. All students, employees and visitors are reminded to drive carefully while on campus and remember to buckle up. SWIC Traffic Code booklets are available at all campus Public Safety Offices. Traffic Code Policy
Safety Reminders:- All operators, regardless of the type of vehicle, shall obey all traffic control signs, directions, signals and/or voice commands given by a member of the Department of Public Safety, civil law enforcement officers or emergency personnel.
- The posted speed limit on the Sam Wolf Granite City and Red Bud Campuses is 15 miles per hour.
- The posted speed limits at the Belleville Campus are 10 miles per hour in the parking lots and 20 miles per hour on the outer road.
- Stop signs are placed on campus for your safety as well as everyone who drives and walks on campus. Please STOP when you come to a stop sign.
- Pedestrians have the right of way in crosswalks and parking lot driving lanes.
- Bicycling is a common form of transportation on our campuses. Be aware of cyclists and afford them the same courtesy afforded motor vehicles.
- Cyclists must obey the same rules, regulations and laws as any other vehicle driver. Some areas of the campuses are designated for one-way traffic. Comply with Do Not Enter and One-Way traffic signs.
Traffic Stop:
The college offers many programs and services that include participation by children. Please be observant for small children in the parking lots and on walkways.
Special events and construction projects may require roads or parking areas to be blocked by barricades. The college regrets any temporary inconvenience of this nature. Do not drive around barricades or cones. Illinois Law requires motorists to stop for school buses while loading and unloading passengers. The bus will have red flashing lights on and the STOP sign bar visible when loading and unloading passengers.
Southwestern Illinois College requires students and employees to display parking permits. These permits are free and you may get a permit for each vehicle you drive. Parking permits enable officers to quickly contact you if they discover a problem with your vehicle.
The Department of Public Safety has officers who regularly patrol the parking lots and outer roads. While our main patrol focus is on crime prevention and the personal safety of our students, employees and visitors, there may be times when you are stopped by an officer for a traffic violation. In order for the traffic stop to be completed as quickly and safely as possible for you and the officer, please observe these procedures:
- Stop your vehicle off the roadway as far as possible, so as not to block the flow of other traffic.
- Remain in your vehicle unless the officer asks you to exit. The danger of being struck by other traffic is a serious risk.
- Keep your hands on the steering wheel where the officer can see them. This is vital to the safety of the officer as well as your safety.
- Please be cooperative and patient. The officer will complete the stop as quickly and efficiently as possible.
