Course Information

Auditing Courses

Auditing a course means that a student may attend the class but will not receive course credit for attendance or work performed. The instructor may or may not restrict a student's participation in class assignments, testing, classroom discussion and/or other class activities, as (s)he deems appropriate. Students auditing courses should discuss their audit status with the instructor. Some restrictions apply.

Southwestern Illinois College courses fall into three categories

  1. Those which may not be audited (see Non-Audit Classes listing below).
  2. Those which may be audited, but require the approval of the department (see Audit by Permission Classes listing below).
  3. Those which may be audited and require no approval. All credit classes NOT listed below fall into this last category.

Non-Audit Classes

Audit by Permission Classes

Enrolling for Audit Status

In order to audit a course, a student must wait to register until after the class has begun. To register, complete an Audit Request Form in person at any of the three campuses or at Scott AFB..

Additionally, if a student wishes to register for an Audit By Permission course (see listing above), (s)he must first obtain a Permission to Audit Form, available in each department, and obtain the written approval of the Department Head or Program Coordinator (as appropriate) and the Dean. Students should bring this to registration.

Notes and Restrictions: Tuition and fees are the same whether auditing a class or taking it for credit. Once registered, changing status from credit to audit, or vice versa, is not permitted. Closed class cards are not issued to audit status students. Audit status in a class does not qualify for financial aid eligibility. Finally, please remember that audited classes cannot be used at a later date for college credit or to fulfill admission or graduation requirements!
