Safe Zone

What is Safe Zone?

Safe Zone is a program which identifies faculty and staff who will provide empathy, acceptance, support and resources for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, cross-dressing, and intersex students.

Students will know who they can go to for help by the Safe Zone symbol posted in the individual's workspace. They can go to them for help, advice, or just to talk to someone in confidence that will be supportive and accepting. This symbol also means that biased and offensive actions and comments will be addressed in an educational and informative manner.

Colleagues and students have a right to their opinion. However, if someone is stating myths or misinformation about gender and sexual diversity, Safe Zone members will inform them of more accurate information in a respectful manner.

Be aware that a Safe Zone symbol posted in an office shared by more than one person does not mean all people in the office have undergone Safe Zone training.
