Kids' Club - Irish Brown

Irish Brown of Granite City was working as a CNA and housekeeper when she suffered a back injury that caused her to rethink her career plans.

“I went straight into the workforce after high school,” Brown said. “I knew I needed to go back to school if I wanted to advance.” She made the decision to study science at SWIC and plans to go into the medical field.

Brown, the mother of two boys, Trae, 13, and Vontrae, 6, says her pursuit of education at SWIC would not be possible without the Kids’ Club program the college offers.

She appreciates that her son is close by in case he needs her, and that she does not have to make an extra stop in the morning to drop him off elsewhere.

“Kids’ Club is so dependable, and it’s convenient for me,” said Brown. “My son [Vontrae] is too young for summer school so this has been perfect.”

Children enrolled in Kids’ Club enjoy a weekly cooking activity with the University of Illinois Extension; a weekly art activity with the Schmidt Art Center; daily literacy activities with AmeriCorps members; and daily physical fitness games, math games, science experiments and one-on-one homework help.

“Vontrae really enjoys it here,” Brown added. “He brings back something every day that he has learned. He’s having fun without realizing he’s learning.”

In addition to using Kids’ Club, Brown takes advantage of the MetroLink stop on the SWIC Belleville Campus. “The MetroLink makes it so easy to get to classes,” Brown said. “I don’t have a working vehicle right now and don’t know how I would make it to campus without the MetroLink,” she said.

Kids’ Club offers care for children ages 3-12 who are able to use the restroom unassisted. Day and evening hours are available, and both Pell Grant and CHASI are accepted.

Rates are $125 for weekly care, $4 per hour ($2.50 for each additional child) for reserved care and $5 per hour ($3.50 for each additional child) for occasional care.

Kids’ Club is only available to registered SWIC students.
