Teens and tweens can get a creative workout this summer through Summer Art Intensives as they learn about artists and art techniques.

The William and Florence Schmidt Art Center at Southwestern Illinois College’s Belleville Campus, 2500 Carlyle Ave., will offer a total of four intensives during June and July as a way to beat the heat and provide some summer fun.

Sculpture, drawing and illustration will be the focus of intensives offered for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students:

  • Drawings and Illustrations will meet Monday through Thursday, June 12-15 from 1-4 p.m. Students will have the opportunity to challenge their drawing and illustration skills while experimenting with traditional and contemporary techniques and concepts. They will work with a wide range of materials and surfaces as they investigate drawings and illustrations of artists from all over the world.
  • Sculpture will meet Monday through Thursday, July 10-13 from 1-4 p.m. Using traditional and contemporary materials, students will learn to create nonfunctional sculpture. Compositional design, along with formal elements – such as positive and negative space, form and line – will be explored.

High school students can choose to sign up for Painting and Drawing and Sculpture intensives.

  • Painting and Drawing will meet Monday through Thursday, June 19-22 from 1-4 p.m. Students will work with contemporary and traditional painting and drawing media in a challenging and creative environment. Focus will be on advanced compositional design of 2-D work.
  • Sculpture will meet Monday through Thursday, July 17-20 from 1-4 p.m. Teens will investigate a myriad of sculptural design principles with close examination of form and composition, as well as learn about art history and art critique, in this challenging intensive. They will work with a variety of traditional and nontraditional media.

The fee for each of the four Summer Intensive sessions is $95. Register online at A discount on classes is available to Schmidt Art Center members. For information, visit
