Student from first class to complete the Home Energy Auditor Training Program

Owning a construction and real estate company is a dream for Charles Smith of East St. Louis.

So, when he saw a flier for the Home Energy Auditor Training program offered by the Southwestern Illinois College Adult Basic Education office, he knew it could change his life and open doors to the green building industry.

As a union electrician, he believes that completing the program and earning Building Performance Institute certification can only benefit him in the employment marketplace and get him another step closer to his goal.

In 2012, he completed the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers apprenticeship program, becoming a journeyman electrician. Completion of the HEAT program will give him additional marketable skills in an evolving construction field increasingly focused on energy efficiency and LEED certification.

"Everyone has been very supportive, including my classmates. The instructors were very helpful through the entire process," he notes, adding that he liked the challenge the program offered.

Having gone through the program, he'd tell other students to keep a positive attitude, stay focused and don't let the information overwhelm them.
