Free GED® classes in January

If you're considering earning a GED® certificate, now is the time, and the Southwestern Illinois College Adult Basic Education department is ready to help!

"Beginning in 2014 we will see a revised version of the GED® exam," notes SWIC GED® Director Vicki Whitener-Lepanto, Ed.D. "We are encouraging individuals who are considering taking the test to sign up for classes now in order to fully prepare for the modified assessment."   

Several free SWIC GED® high school equivalency test preparation classes get under way in St. Clair and Madison counties in January. The classes are open to anyone who has not yet received a high school diploma.  

See the list below or visit the GED page for information on upcoming classes.  

GED® classes will meet Thursday, Jan. 9 through Friday, Jan. 31 from 9 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. Monday through Friday at the following locations:

  • East St. Louis Community College Center, 601 James R. Thompson Blvd.

Additional GED® classes will meet Monday, Tuesday and Thursday starting Tuesday, Jan. 21 through Thursday, Feb. 27 from 9 a.m. to noon at the following locations:

  • SWIC Red Bud Campus, 500 W. South Fourth St.
  • Christian Activity Center, 540 N. Sixth St., East St. Louis

Evening GED® classes will meet Tuesday and Thursday starting Thursday, Jan. 9 through Thursday, Feb. 27 from 5:30-8:50 p.m. at the following locations: 

  • SWIC Belleville Campus
  • SWIC Sam Wolf Granite City Campus
  • East St. Louis Community College Center
  • Collinsville High School, 2201 S. Morrison St.

Those taking classes at the SWIC Belleville, Sam Wolf Granite City campuses or the East St. Louis Community College Center must attend a preregistration orientation session before beginning classes. Those taking classes at the SWIC Red Bud Campus, Collinsville High School, Christian Activity Center or Cahokia Holy Family School can register at the first session.

Free Windows® 7/Internet and Beginning Computers classes offered

Southwestern Illinois College is offering free Windows® 7/Internet and Beginning Computers classes.   

These free Adult Basic Education classes, which begin in January, are available to: people who do not have a high school diploma or GED; recent GED recipients; English as a Second Language students; or individuals who participate in the Department of Human Services programs.  

In Beginning Computers, students will gain basic computer knowledge and familiarity with Windows® 7 and Internet Explorer 8. Class will be held Wednesdays at the SWIC Sam Wolf Granite City Campus, 4950 Maryville Road, Room 534, Wednesday, Jan. 22 through Wednesday, Feb. 26, or Mondays at the East St. Louis Community College Center, 601 James R. Thompson Blvd., Room 1002, Monday, Jan. 27 through Monday, Feb. 24 from 5:30-8:20 p.m.   

In Windows® 7/Internet, students will gain a working knowledge of Microsoft Windows® as well as navigating the internet, basic commands, features and functions. A class will be held Mondays at the SWIC Belleville Campus, 2500 Carlyle Ave., Room 1421, Monday, Jan. 27 through Monday, Feb. 24 from 6-8:50 p.m. Preregistration is required for all classes.

Free classes start in January

Improve your English skills beginning in January through free Southwestern Illinois College Adult Basic Education English as a Second Language and Citizenship courses.

Adult Basic Education offers these free programs to GED students, recent GED certificate recipients, anyone without a high school diploma, anyone in a Department of Human Services program, anyone for whom English is a second language, and other eligible students.

In the English as a Second Language classes, foreign-born adults learn to understand, speak, read and write English.

At the SWIC Belleville Campus, 2500 Carlyle Ave., choose from the following classes:

  • ESL: Beginner - Jan. 13 to March 6 - Monday through Thursday, 9-11:50 a.m.
  • ESL: Multi-level - Jan. 13 to March 6 - Monday through Thursday, 12:30-2:20 p.m.
  • ESL: Advanced - Jan. 13 to March 6 - Monday through Thursday, 9-11:50 a.m.
  • ESL: Academic - Jan. 13 to March 6 - Monday through Thursday, 12:30-2:20 p.m.
  • ESL - Jan. 13 to March 5 - Monday and Wednesday, 5:45-9 p.m.
  • ESL: Academic - Jan. 14 to March 6- Tuesday and Thursday, 6-8:50 p.m.  

At the SWIC Sam Wolf Granite City Campus, 4950 Maryville Road, choose from the following classes:

  • ESLJan. 13 to March 6 - Monday through Thursday, 9-11:50 a.m.
  • ESLJan. 14 to March 6 - Tuesday and Thursday, 6-8:50 p.m.  

A class will be held at the Fairmont City Library, 2870 N. 44th St., Jan. 15 to March 7, Wednesday and Friday, from noon-2:50 p.m.  

A class will be held at the Collinsville High School, 2201 S. Morrison St., Jan. 13 to March 5, Monday and Wednesday, from 5:45-9 p.m.

Citizenship offered in the classroom or online

Prepare for the U.S. Citizenship examination beginning in January through free Southwestern Illinois College Adult Basic Education Citizenship courses.

SWIC will offer a Citizenship class at the SWIC Belleville Campus Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Thursday, Jan. 16 and ending Thursday, Jan. 30 from 6-8:50 p.m. and an online class from Monday, Jan. 27 through Friday, Feb. 28.
