Resume Tips

  • Print your resume on standard letter size, white or ivory paper.
  • Keep the resume to no more than two pages.
  • CAPITALIZE, bold, italicize, underline, and use bullets.
  • Make sure your resume and cover letter are error-free.
  • Proofread.
  • Always write a resume for a specific job with a specific company.
  • Include your significant contributions at each one of your jobs.
  • Allow the most space for the jobs that are most relevant to the position for which you are applying.
  • Be honest and enthusiastic. Stress achievements.
  • Be specific, give examples.
  • Keep at least a one-inch margin on all four sides of the page.
  • Single space within sections. Double space between sections.
  • Don’t overuse the words, I, I am, and my.
  • Start your sentences with action verbs.
  • Never give reasons for termination or leaving a job on a resume.
  • Don’t provide salary information on the resume.
  • Never include your height, weight or remarks about your physical appearance or health.
  • When in doubt about hobbies, sport and social activities, leave them out.
  • Never lie.
  • When possible, state volunteer services, or related career honors and memberships.
