 How to Register 

Mad Science summer camps offer a unique combination of fun, hands-on activities, with extended science investigation. Each day follows a different theme and the children play games, perform experiments and assist with demonstrations all related to that theme. In typical Mad Science fashion, they also make something to take home with them to encourage continued exploration of scientific concepts and discovery. Instructors provided by Mad Science.

Children will be provided with a morning and afternoon break and must bring a sack lunch.
Classes are held Monday through Friday at Southwestern Illinois College, 2500 Carlyle Avenue, Belleville, IL 62221.

June 20-24 ∙ 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Junior Rocket Scientists!
Ages 5-12
This action packed week will focus solely on rockets and the physics of rocket flight. After learning the model rocket safety code, campers will build different types of rockets and participate in rocket launches during the week-long program. Children will be divided into three groups; altitude trackers, launch preparers and launchers for rocket launches and will get the opportunity to try different roles. We recommend this camp for children entering 2nd - 5th grade; however, children entering kindergarten and 1st grade will enjoy it as well with a little more help from fellow campers or instructors.

Note: We will launch rockets and your child will build several types of rockets. Our camp includes everything your child needs during our camp day. However, if you wish to continue your child’s interest in rocket launches outside our camp, you will need to purchase a launch kit from Walmart or a hobby shop.

How to Register  

Abra-Kid-Abra summer camps combine fun, hands-on activities while developing presentations skills! The days are broken into short modules to keep the activities varied and campers excited. The modules involve lots of hand-on activities. (e.g. participating in comedy warm-ups, building your own magic tricks, twisting animal balloons, etc.) Instructors provided by Abra-Kid-Abra.

Children must bring a morning and afternoon beverage and snack and a sack lunch for full-day classes.

Love the classes, but need full week or full day care? SWIC has partnered with the YMCA and created four options to meet those needs. 

Option A - Campers will start at the YMCA for pre-care (as early as 6:30 a.m.). Campers will be escorted to SWIC classes for their start at 8 a.m. After classes end at 11:30 a.m., campers will be picked up at SWIC by their parents or guardians.

Days: Monday-Thursday    Times Available: 6:30-8 a.m.  Friday Care also available at no extra fee (6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.)

Cost: $60


Option B - Campers will start at the YMCA for pre-care (as early as 6:30 a.m.). Campers will be escorted to SWIC classes for their start at 8 a.m. After classes end at 11:30 a.m., campers will be escorted back to YMCA for Day Camp for an afternoon of swimming, games and fun activities.

Art Intensive: Drawings and Illustrations

Grades 6-8

This intensive offers students the opportunity to challenge their drawing and illustration skills while experimenting with traditional and contemporary techniques and concepts.  Students will work with a wide range of materials and surfaces while investigating drawings and illustrations of artists from all over the world.  

Fee: $95

June 20-23, 1-4pm (M-Th)

Teen Art Intensive: Painting and Drawing

This intensive offers students the opportunity to work with contemporary and traditional painting and drawing mediums in a challenging and creative environment.  Successful and advanced compositional design of the 2D work will be a main objective of instruction.

July 11-14, 9-12pm (M-Th.

Art Intensive: 3D Designs

Grades 6-8

Through traditional and contemporary materials, students will investigate the endless possibilities of 3D media and learn to create non-functional sculpture. Compositional design, along with the formal elements such as positive and negative space, form, and line will be explored.

July 18-21, 1-4pm (-Th)

Teen Intensive: 3D Designs 

This intensive will challenge students to investigate a myriad of 3D design principles with close examination of form and composition. Students will work with a variety of traditional and non-traditional media, while also learning about art history and art critique.
