Life Experienced – A Senior Art Competition, held recently at the Southwestern Illinois College Schmidt Art Center, drew more than 60 talented artists 60 years of age and older from all across the Metro East to showcase their artwork.

The event was sponsored in partnership by SWIC and the St. Clair County Office on Aging. Additional support for the event included: St. Clair County Board Chairman Mark Kern, SWIC President Georgia Costello, Ph.D., Art on the Square, Gateway East Artists Guild, Belleville News-Democrat and Mabel Grogan.

The exhibition was on display at The Schmidt from March 1-5.

Award winners included:

  • Alex Nadler of Swansea – SWIC President’s Award for his piece titled “Mahogany Box” and an Award of Excellence for “Segmented Bowl.”
  • Bob DeFrates of Belleville – the Chairman’s Award for his etching “Reclining Nude.”
  • Rita Cooper of O’Fallon – Gary DeRousse Memorial- Honorable Mention Award for her oil painting “Dog Walker – Paris.”
  • Susan Gilchrist of Swansea – Gary DeRousse Memorial- Honorable Mention Award for her dip pen and ink drawing “Prickly Pinecone.”
  • Karen Romani of Glen Carbon – Gary DeRousse Memorial- Honorable Mention Award for her watercolor “Grazing.”
  • Kim Richard Depigian of Belleville – Award of Merit for his acrylic ink on plastic painting “Caverns Cavity.”
  • Shiela Woodruff of Belleville – Award of Merit for her woodcut print “Near the Sea.”
  • Gary Olds of O’Fallon – Award of Merit for his leather/metal work titled “Steppin’ Out.”
  • Thomas Meadows of Red Bud – Award of Merit for his photograph “Blinded by the Light.”
  • Janet Musick of O’Fallon – Award of Merit for her ceramic piece “Nest and Feathers.”
  • Jospeh Carriel of Belleville – Award of Excellence for his collage “Frida Kahlo” and Gary DeRousse Memorial- Honorable Mention Award for a giclee print titled “Jagger.”
  • Michael Anderson of Belleville – Award of Excellence for his India ink drawing “Old Bridge, 2/5/2017.”
  • Yvonne MeckFessel of Troy – Award of Excellence for her digital photo “Egret Closeup.”
  • Mary Konieczny of O’Fallon – Award of Excellence for her ceramic piece “Out of Africa.”
