Southwestern Illinois College has earned the 2018 Military Friendly School designation by Victory Media, publisher of G.I. Jobs, STEM Jobs, and Military Spouse. The college is ranked sixth in the Top Ten Large Community College category. This is the fifth year the college has been recognized as a Military Friendly School.
More than 1,300 higher education institutions participated in the 2017-18 survey; 849 were awarded the designation in recognition of their support of the military community. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey scores with the assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence (degree advancement or transfer) and loan default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans.
“We proudly serve the largest student veteran population of any public institution in Illinois,” said President Georgia Costello, Ph.D. “Supporting veterans and military families is one of our top priorities. We are honored to be recognized once again as a Military Friendly School for the support and programming we offer to our student veterans. Veterans are our heroes.”
Military Friendly® schools represent the top tier of institutions that provide the best opportunities for military service members and spouses. Having the designation shows that your school is better for veterans with the admissions, student support and career services in place to prepare them for graduation and gainful employment.
Southwestern Illinois College provides student veterans with a strong support system including Veteran-to-Veteran tutoring, an active Student Veterans of America Chapter, Veterans Student Center, specialized resume and job search workshops, and specialized orientation tracks.
Also, SWIC is one of only 94 schools nationwide to have a full-time U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs VetSuccess on Campus counselor on site. In addition, the college hosts an annual Veterans Job Fair that attracts more than 100 employers and assists student veterans and veteran alumni in securing employment and advancement opportunities.
