BEREAVEMENT: SUPPORTING EACH OTHER IN THE JOURNEY OF GRIEF AND LOSS

This interactive presentation highlights the stages of grieving with emphasis on coping with the day to day emotions during the grief journey. Learn the risk factors contributing to complicated bereavement and how to deal with in a healthy way. Those attending are encouraged to interact with the facilitator and each other regarding their grief experience. We may even smile and laugh a little! Coping strategies, memories, and community resources are discussed.

This session teaches how to use census records in genealogy. Learn about the characteristics of a census record, how to use the information to further your research and where to locate census records. A PowerPoint presentation will be used and includes hand-outs on genealogy resources.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAMS AND SERVICES FOR OLDER PERSONS

This session focuses on the myriad services available throughout various sites in the college district. Services include meals, transportation, respite care, training and volunteer opportunities and educational, recreational and social programs.

REASONING, RECALL, RETENTION, AND REMINISCENCE: MAINTAINING HEALTHY MEMORY AND COGNITIVE ABILITIES

This presentation educates older adults and caregivers of older adults about the different types of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. Learn the difference between worrisome symptoms versus common occurrences. Review interventions, safety concerns and lifestyle changes to assist with dementia care. Community resources, including the Alzheimer’s Association and local support groups, are discussed.

An additional presentation is also available to specifically address an audience of only-caregivers of those with a dementia.

SENIOR COMPANION PROGRAM

The Southwestern Illinois College Senior Companion Program provides care for seniors at risk of losing their independence because of nursing home placement. The federally funded program is free to the client. Those 60 and older who meet an income guideline and enjoy working with seniors are eligible to participate. Companions are paid a non-taxable stipend, mileage, insurance and other benefits.

This presentation educates older adults and caregivers of older adults about how significant life stressors can affect coping and life function. Learn how stress, adjustment disorders, anxiety, depression or other mental health issues may impact an older adult. Learn what interventions can reduce stress, treat these disorders and greatly improve life satisfaction. After all, there should be many more ups than downs!
