Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration

Back to Top Program Overview

The Southwestern Illinois College Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAR) program prepares students for careers in the HVAR industry. The industry is always changing, and trained personnel are in great demand. At SWIC, students will receive excellent training on a variety of systems and cutting-edge technologies preparing them for a rewarding career as a valued company technician or even owner of their own company.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the 2010 median pay for the occupation was $42,530 per year or $20.45 per hour, and the job outlook was great with jobs being added at a rate of 34% (much faster than average) over the course of the next ten years.

Students may earn an Associate in Applied Science degree in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration or an HVAR Certificate. In addition to the AAS degree at SWIC, students may continue their education at Ferris State University and earn an engineering degree in HVAR. Students wishing to transfer to Ferris State University must take Physics 151 and Math 112. The Capstone Program is another option available through Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

All students entering the AAS degree program are required to take the COMPASS placement test prior to entering the program.
