Southwestern Illinois College is firmly committed to protecting the privacy of the faculty, staff, and students.

eStorm, and SWIC.edu are designed to provide information to SWIC staff members and aid them in doing college business.

The information contained in the sites are not intended to be used for personal gain or for non-academic business, so the use of these resources are monitored.

We believe that access to these sites are a privilege, not a right, and we reserve the right to terminate access to anyone who misuses these resources.

Confidential data

Some of the data on these sites are considered confidential by SWIC. Access to these sites is controlled and only users who require access to this information for their job are granted access.

Users are expected to respect the confidentiality of the data they are granted access to. Violation of this confidentiality will result in removal of access to all SWIC resources.

  • Social Security Numbers: Some of our web sites with student data, personnel and payroll data contain Social Security Numbers, which are confidential and protected by the Privacy Act of 1974, Illinois statute, Personal Information Protection Act (815 ILCS § 530/);  and SWIC Board approved policies
  • Student data: Some of our resources contain student information, the privacy of which is governed by the Family Educational Rights to Privacy Act, which can be found at: https://www.swic.edu/students/swic-cares-about-you/ferpa/

Security logs: We maintain security logs of all log in events. We use these to monitor repeated password violations and other events that might indicate someone is trying to break into our systems.  If we see that a login was used repeatedly with an incorrect password, we may contact the user, the user’s supervisor, or the network administrator or security contact of the user’s IP address to find out what is causing the problem.

Access logs: We also track all requests for web pages and maintain logs of these requests with the time, user id, IP address, and type of operating system and browser. The logs are used to provide statistics

GOOGLE ANALYTICS AND ONLINE ADVERTISING

SWIC uses Google Analytics, which is a web analysis service provided by Google. Google places a cookie on the web browsers of visitors to www.swic.edu and collects, tracks and examines the use of www.swic.edu to prepare reports on site’s activities through Google Analytics dashboards and to share with other Google services the college subscribes to such as Google AdWords. Google also uses third-party audience data such as age, gender and interests to help us better understand the behavior of our website visitors.

This allows us helps track and manage the effectiveness of our marketing efforts.

In addition, the college uses Google AdWords. The college may use Google AdWords and other third-party vendors for remarketing/retargeting. Google and remarketing/retargeting systems place cookies and/or web beacons on web browsers to serve ads based on your interests and/or past visits to swic.edu

USE OF INFORMATION COLLECTED FROM SWIC.EDU

The information the college collects may be used to correspond with you. The college will never sell the personal information you submit to us through swic.edu to any persons or organizations. The college may share it with reputable third parties contracted to provide services such as email, or when required by law for the investigation of illegal or criminal actives, the exercise of legal rights or in defense against any legal claims, or otherwise. The college also maintain adherence to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act regulations.

OPTING OUT

You may opt out of the third-party ad networks’ use of cookies by visiting the consumer opt-out page for the Self-Regulatory Principles for Online Behavioral Advertising and edit or opt-out of Google cookie use by updating your preferences in the Ads Preferences Manager.
