As Southwestern Illinois College entered the 21st century, it embraced a new identity while continuing its mission of providing affordable, accessible, and high-quality education throughout the region. A New Name for a New Century
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, dozens of infrastructures and programmatic investments helped strengthen the higher education ecosystem across Southwestern Illinois. These improvements expanded access, modernized facilities, and prepared institutions to meet the needs of a growing and diversifying student population. But one project stood out.
The $16 Million Campus Expansion of 1996
The most significant milestone of the decade officially began on January 1, 2000, when Belleville Area College became Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC). Following voter approval in 1999, the new name reflected the institution’s expanding service area and its commitment to students across multiple counties in southwestern Illinois.
The transition represented more than a name change. It marked the evolution of the college into a regional institution with a broader mission, stronger community presence, and renewed focus on meeting the educational and workforce needs of the communities it serves.
Expanding Opportunities for Students
Throughout the decade, SWIC continued to strengthen its academic offerings while investing in facilities, technology, and student services. As enrollment remained strong, the college enhanced transfer pathways, expanded career and technical education programs, and increased support services designed to help students succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Honoring a Legacy at the Granite City Campus
In 2006, another important milestone highlighted the college’s connection to the region. The Granite City Campus was officially renamed the Sam Wolf Granite City Campus in honor of former Illinois state representative and longtime SWIC trustee Sam Wolf.
Wolf’s dedication to higher education and public service helped shape the college’s growth and strengthened educational opportunities throughout the Metro East. The naming recognized his lasting contributions to both the institution and the communities it serves..
Building for the Future
By the close of the decade, Southwestern Illinois College had firmly established itself as one of the region’s leading community colleges. With campuses serving multiple communities, expanded academic opportunities, and a growing reputation for student success, SWIC entered the next decade well positioned to continue its tradition of excellence.
