Philosophy | Southwestern Illinois College

PHILOSOPHY PRE-MAJOR

Philosophy is at the core of liberal arts education. Its study prepares students for a wide range of pursuits. The study of philosophy develops a student’s ability to analyze, evaluate, and discuss ideas. While a career in philosophy is confined largely to teaching, students of philosophy have gone on to become lawyers, managers, theologians, writers, artists, comedians, and talk show hosts.

Philosophy is the study of the big theories in life. It probes into questions that range from those about who we are to the questions about the nature of reality, the meaning of the good life, the essence of truth, the idea of the good government, the notion of God, and the requirements of good art.
