Coronavirus Response & Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act - Southwestern Illinois College

CRRSAA Emergency Student Assistance Overview

On December 27, 2020, the United States Secretary of Education announced the implementation of the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA).

Southwester Illinois College Allocation

$10,331,214.00

Minimum for Student Emergency Funds

$2,338,758.00

This act provides institutions with significant discretion on how to award the emergency assistance to students. The statutory requirement is that funds must be used to cover expenses related to their cost of attendance (i.e. tuition, fees, books, supplies, transportation, room/board, and miscellaneous personal expenses). Funding must be distributed within one year from the date the Certification and Agreement is approved.

Eligible Student Population

Our eligible student population focuses on students enrolled in undergraduate coursework for the Spring 2021 term.

The CARES awarding application process revealed that our student population demonstrated a need above the initial award amounts we disbursed in Spring 2020. To reduce the burden on the administration and our student population, we will forego the application process for CRRSAA and provide the entire eligible population with a one-time award of $1,000. This award will be refunded directly to the student, providing immediate financial assistance with their cost of attendance (i.e. tuition, fees, books, supplies, transportation, room/board, and miscellaneous personal expenses). Placing these funds directly in the hands of students provides them the flexibility to apply this award to the aforementioned expenses at their discretion.

We assessed students with exceptional needs as follows:

  • Requiring a 2020-2021 FAFSA on file
    • This population represents all students who applied for financial assistance during the pandemic
  • Minimum half-time enrollment of 6 credit hours
    • All students in this population represent a cost of attendance greater than $1,000
  • Meet SAP (MEET, PLAN, WARN)
Total Number of Students Awarded

2,535

Total CRRSAA Funds Distributed to Student Population

$2,535,000

Student Notification

“Dear SWIC Student,

The recently mailed check of $1,000 is a one-time award utilizing federal funding from the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA). SWIC recognizes the potential hardship caused by COVID-19 and this funding will not impact your financial aid. This funding never has to be paid back and is to help you during these challenging times to assist with any component of the cost of attendance (i.e. tuition, fees, books and supplies, transportation, room and board, and miscellaneous personal expenses).

If you would like to make a payment on an outstanding balance, payments can be made online via your Student Center, by phone at 1-877-902-5949, or by cash, check, or credit card in person at the Student Accounts Office.

Summer and Fall enrollment are open now! You may contact Academic Advising for assistance by emailing advising@swic.edu.  Take care and stay safe!”
