About the Phlebotomy Program

The Phlebotomy program prepares students to provide phlebotomy skills in medical offices, private laboratory or hospital setting.
In this program, you will study phlebotomy, medical terminology, and use of computers or Windows software programs.
The Phlebotomy program is offered at Southwestern's Belleville and Granite City campuses. Upon successful completion of the program, you can enter the work force with entry-level computer and phlebotomy skills.
Duties of a phlebotomist include collecting and transporting specimens, effectively explaining methods of specimen collection to patients, and monitoring quality assurance in collection of blood specimens.
You will have a chance to put your classroom knowledge to work during a 120-hour externship at an area medical facility.
After successfully completing 7.5 credit hours, you will earn a certificate of proficiency.
Career Opportunities
A graduate of the Phlebotomy Certificate will be prepared to work as a:
- Phlebotomist
Phlebotomists are employed in physicians' offices, hospitals, clinics and independent laboratories.
Starting salaries are about $27,000- $31,200 annually, salaries vary depending on the size and location of the health care facility. Salaries are higher when working on the second or third shifts.
