The Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) Early Childhood Education Apprenticeship Program offers a hands-on, “earn-while-you-learn” pathway for students pursuing careers in early childhood education. Apprentices gain valuable on-the-job experience while completing college coursework that leads to nationally recognized credentials and career advancement in the field of early learning.
Why Choose Apprenticeship?
Early Childhood Education Apprenticeships benefit both educators and children by combining paid employment, college coursework, and mentored training. This model allows participants to earn while they learn, develop professional expertise, and strengthen the quality of care and education in their communities.
Benefits for Apprentices
- Build a professional network: Connect with peers, mentors, and program leaders who can support your long-term success.
- Earn while you learn: Gain practical experience and a paycheck while completing your education.
- Paid-for education: Many apprentices qualify for financial aid, tuition assistance, or employer-paid time for classes.
- Receive mentorship and support: Learn directly from experienced early childhood educators who guide you in applying classroom knowledge to real-world practice.
- Earn recognized credentials: Complete a program leading to a Child Development Associate (CDA) and ECE Level 3 Credential through Gateways to Opportunity.
- Career advancement and higher wages: Build skills that qualify you for promotions, higher pay, and leadership opportunities in the field.

Benefits for Employers
- Skilled and stable workforce: Apprenticeships help retain motivated, well-trained employees who are committed to the field.
- Improved quality of care: Staff gain new skills and knowledge that directly enhance program quality and child outcomes.
- Reduced turnover: Employees who see a clear career path and receive support are more likely to stay long-term.
- Higher quality ratings: Programs with credentialed staff are better positioned to achieve higher quality designations, which can lead to increased funding opportunities.
- State tax credit incentive: Employers participating in registered apprenticeship programs may qualify for the Illinois Apprenticeship Education Tax Credit, which provides up to $3,500 per apprentice (or $5,000 for certain groups).
