Court Security Officer Academy - Southwestern Illinois College

Court Security Officer Academy

As part of determining and guiding the revisions to be made for the Court Security Officer curriculum, a job task analysis was conducted to seek input from current Court Security Officers on areas of training they feel need to be improved. The results from this job task analysis identified the following areas as having the biggest training gaps: mental health, personal defense/ control tactics, detainee security, report writing, communication/ verbal de-escalation skills, and emergency training. In addition to the job task analysis, other revisions for the curriculum are supported by evidence-based research and by guidance from subject matter experts. These additions bring the revised Court Security Officer curriculum to a total of 240 hours: 80 hours online and 160 hours in person.

An officer is registered into the course through the waiver process. A Form E, Notice of Appointment for the Full-time Classification and a Full-time Waiver Request application must be filed with ILETSB to enroll the officer in the course.

Form E’s and Waivers must be all done via LEDI, https://ledi/ptb.illinois.gov. Waiver Applications must be fully processed to enroll the officer. The law enforcement agency sponsoring the full time officer will receive a letter in response to the waiver application indicating the officer has been enrolled. (This program was designed to be similar to the Transition Academy enrollment process. These steps may change as ILETSB completes the registration process.)

The purpose of this course is to reinforce previous training in critical duties and responsibilities, as well as introduce concepts that may not have been examined in previous training. There is an online component and an in-person component.

The Court Security Officer Program echoes the Southwestern Illinois Police Academy’s belief in providing equal opportunity of learning for those that attend this program and feel that we can instill the core values of all law enforcement Knowledge, Honor and Integrity.

This is a new program in 2025 and all information is subject to change based on ILETSB approval/direction. Please reach out to ILETSB’s Certification Section for any questions or issues with the Waiver or Form E’s – PTB.Certification@Illinois.gov.
